youtube addiction

musicmusicmusic

so, i've really gotten addicted to the youtube thing, especially when i'm stuck here an entire day studying the nerves and vessels of the arm (a veritable southern california road map). and i've opened my own youtube page, where i've posted most of my concert, kayaking, and dumb animal videos: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=twosoakers

like this (i was drunk. very very drunk):

dan bern

very. very. very. drunk. rose for emily drunk:

dan again (i hope you never see this. or remember it. i mean, remember me. ever.)

and this (i wasn't drunk. just ecstatically happy):

aimee mann

lucy kaplansky

dar williams

and this:

elephant seals

and this:

esther

overkill - men at work

-------

valotte - julian lennon - okay. so it's a bit more vh1 (a lot more vh1. back when vh1 was vh1). and i took four years of french and still don't know what valotte means.

-------

poison arrow - abc - had this on 45, too. i think this one, dance hall days, and come daincin' were all filmed in the same spot. oh, martini! et deus ex machina!

-------

something about you - level 42 - caught onto this right after i was one of the mom's i was babysitting for gave me flowers in the attic to read (gasp!). i think i got the two confused. don't ask me how.

-------

shattered dreams - johnny hates jazz - used to listen to this repeatedly (the radio stations replayed it repeatdly) while i stood in line to ride the laser at dorney park. rode the laser twelve times in one day. b104 played this twelves times, too. the next year i was working there, watching the coaster train get stuck every two hours or so. i heard clark dentschler's a real jerk.

-------

china girl - david bowie - as racist as they come.

-------

turning japanese - the vapors - gives china girl a run for its money. the mullet might be even more offensive. couldn't tell you.

be proud, mr. waits

musicmusicmusic

almost as cute as 'mom said no.' almost.

razorlight...most refreshing thing since i stumbled across sia

musicmusicmusic

i've been thinking of this song since i first saw that hustle commercial. god, it's beautiful. i think a large part of my musical taste stems from some weird joe jackson crush in the early 80s.

america - razorlight

....

musicmusicmusic

you can always just ignore me. cover your eyes. whatever.

musicmusicmusic

screaming in the night - krokus - listed on numerous sites as one of the worst videos of all time. i just liked the diner scene. i was nine. so sue me.

---------

endicott - kid creole and the coconuts - the inspiration for peewee's playhouse

--------

glass tiger - don't forget me when i'm gone - i used to jive to this driving to soccer practice.

--------

photograph - def leppard - marilyn monroe, the tranny. god, pyromania was the best album ever. even better than whatever album that last krokus song was on. even though they had a band member named phil collin.

-------

rock of ages - it's better to burn out than fade away (maybe curt was referencing them, not n.y.)

-------

fuh-fuh-fuh-foolin' - joe elliot....such a hottie....

--------

shock the monkey - peter gabriel - i love accountants.

-------

harden my heart - quarterflash - my cousin and i used to act this out. banging on wood paneling in spandex is fun.

-------

no one like you - the scorpions - forks in the eyeballs, forks in the eyeballs

------

you got lucky - tom petty and the heartbreakers -more bad sky effects and lots of plastic and atari.

-------

sometimes a fantasy - billy joel - good billy, bad billy. creepy. 516-673-1112. i used to call that number. it was a travel agency on long island. guess i'm creepy, too.

one more round....

musicmusicmusic

benataralicious and olivitis and some random others

shadows of the night - get them nazis, pat. get 'em. blow 'em up.

-------

anxiety (get nervous) - a root canal and tawny kitaen hair

----------

you better run - i bet she had to cut herself out of those pants

--------

precious time - pat benatar in an unmelted dali

--------

physical - my first introduction to homosexuality. i didn't get it. my mom didn't explain it. is that timothy busfield?

-------

xanadu - no comment.

--------

twist of fate - baddddddd movie

-------

magic - looks like she changed earrings from filming the physical video

-------

a little more love - heheheheheheheheheheheheeheh

---------

dance hall days - wang chung

-------

dog police - dog police - won the mtv home video award. i remember that. i should be dead.

-------

fish heads - directed and written by chet himself. my mom dressed me up in a garbage bag one halloween. told me i was a witch. i looked like such an ass.

-------

can't find elton john's in neon. dammit.

dar williams at the pabst

musicmusicmusic

we were able to catch dar williams on sunday at the pabst in milwaukee, despite the crazy ice drive home, and route sixty-five littered with accidents. for the first time in awhile, i didn't get my request played (it happens every day), but i did get to hear after all and spring street, so it's all good.

a veggie burger at the rock bottom (dana, i posted this for you)

the bottom of the glass

dar and brianna lane (not the porn star)

the pabst is so small and fun. i just wish it was closer. and less icy. and restaurants downtown shouldn't be closed on sunday and monday. that's a hint, coc.

ok...so it's becoming an obsession

musicmusicmusic

billy joel - pressure - oh, i was in love with the man for the decade following the release of this video (skipping the innocent man foray and despite his bad john lennon/malcolm mcdowell/pink floyd the wall references). god, i'm still in love with 1981 billy joel. come back, dammit.

APPLESAUCE!

---------

adam ant - goody two shoes - set the precendent for frosted hair and flaming pirate outfits and bad eye shadow everywhere

----------

ozzy - bark at the moon - ozzy naked and hairy

----------

chris deburgh - don't pay the ferryman - did he do the soundtracks for the old hobbit cartoons?

---------

wham - careless whisper - oh that large, 80s closet.

----------

scandal - goodbye to you - white blazers and striped shirts

----------

fleetwood mac - gypsy - so pertty, so motels

By Music Jesus.com

---------

the motels - suddenly last summer - speak of the devil

----------

the kinks - come dancing - devil of a time finding any complete version of this.

Come Dancing (http://kinks.it.rit.edu/videoclips/ComeDancing.html)

more 80s

musicmusicmusic

oh, just a few more (oh come on it's fun):

men without hats - safety dance - sorry. no pop goes the world.

----------

after the fire - der kommissar

----------

golden earring - twilight zone - my first experience with bondage babes.

----------

asia - don't cry (had this on 45, too)

---------

baltimora - tarzan boy

----------

billy squier - rock me tonite - a scary combo of liza minelli and richard simmons

----------

wall of voodoo - mexican radio

----------

wendy o. williams - reform school girls - rest her soul, the bad b-movie actress (reform school girls tops them all - the porky's-esque nurse-matron crushes a kitten, then the girl jumps off a water tower, and wendy enacts revenge. at least that's what i remember of about fifteen years ago) and great wildlife rehabilitator.

----------

limahl - neverending story - ha ha. ha. sweet mullet and vertical casio.

----------

last but not least

john waite - change - right up there with the pressure video. yeahhhh.

thank whatever for youtube

musicmusicmusic

i was an mtv child, spending hours in front of the tv trying to understand what the hell was going on in music and getting physically sick of all the rambo: first blood commercials (and the fixx videos). i spent a lot of time at my grandparents house because: 1. they had cable and 2. my mom waitressed a lot when she wasn't working in the cigar factory.

----------

planet p - why me - up until now, i thought it was planet 9 who sang this. but i also thought that the sign in the billy joel video pressure calling for "applause" said "applesauce." i remember asking my mom if this video was about jayne mansfield.

----------

men at work - dr. hekyl and mr. jive - good lord. someone still remembers this. and his name is colin hay. just be glad i didn't post be good johnny. more here for you addicts: http://www.menatwork.com.br/novo/en/index.htm

----------

styx - mr. roboto - my all-time nine-year-old, third grade favorite. i used to hang out in the principal's office to hear this song come over the radio. good ole mr. hester.dennis deyoung in a lilac cotton jumpsuit and permed afro. 'nuff said.

----------

joe jackson - real men - i thought this song was about a boy who got mad because he wasn't invited to a party. i guess i was mostly right. now i teach it to my students.

----------

van stephenson - modern day delilah - he died in 2001 from skin cancer. i had the 45.
