Welcome to ENGL 250 Course Blog!
Submitted by alice on Thu, 2006-07-27 17:17.Welcome to ENGL 250: Great American Books! This site will be our "classroom outside of the classroom," so to speak, where we will converse on the texts we're
reading in class. Here, you will be responsible for responding to the posts that I create on the blog as well as responding to your fellow students' posts. You will also
occasionally be asked to create your own posts using the "story" function. Each week you should respond to the class posts as well as four other students' posts. Your
responses should be thoughtful and should reveal a growing consciousness of the critical evaluation of a literary text. You are also welcome to post on texts that you are
currently reading that you wish to share with the class. The posts and responses will count as a significant portion
of your participation grade.

Class Monday November 20
Submitted by alice on Mon, 2006-11-20 05:26.Hi all,
I've decided to cancel class for Monday November 20 (tomorrow) (lucky you). On the Monday we return, we will be finishing Autobiography of My Mother and reviewing for Wednesday's essay exam. Try to work towards your own analyses of the text in answering the exam questions, and come to class prepared to discuss them. I have attached a copy of the exam questions for those absent on Friday. If you have specific questions about the exam questions, please email them to me over break. Remember, you have to do a little research for the second question.
I've also decided to randomly choose groups to present their films (please make sure they are on DVD/DVDR:
Friday December 1
Groups 3, 5
Monday December 4
Group 2
Wednesday December 6
Group 1
Friday December 8
Group 4 (and any make-up groups)
Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a safe and productive break!
Apropos?

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- Federal investigators are looking into patient care at the hospital made famous in the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," where there have been reports of abuse, short staffing and overcrowding.
The Oregon State Hospital is one of the oldest and most dilapidated state mental institutions in the nation. The movie was filmed there in 1975.
Justice Department officials are expected to visit the hospital next week. The department alerted Gov. Ted Kulongoski in June that it would investigate whether patients' constitutional rights were violated.
The facility is at the center of discussions about reforming mental health care in Oregon. Reports of abuse and other problems led lawmakers to reassess the hospital's future.
Lawmakers have proposed replacing it with two separate hospitals and two residential facilities at an estimated cost of at least $324 million.
It's unclear how long the investigation could take. Justice Department spokeswoman Cynthia Magnuson said she could not discuss the timeline or details of the investigation.

Submitted by alice on Tue, 2006-10-03 21:34.We've decided that our movie analysis/pizza night will be on Tuesday October 17, 2006, at 8:30PM in the third-floor Heavilon Grad. Lounge (right at the top of the middle set of stairs on the third floor). Please RSVP by commenting to this site, and please include what "brand" of pizza/drinks you want and which toppings by Friday October 6.
Pizza Night?
Submitted by alice on Tue, 2006-09-26 14:36.Everyone seems to concur that Tuesday nights sound best, just after 8:15 or so. Does this work?
Is there a particular Tuesday night that DOESN'T work?
Hi all,
Since everyone's brains are so taxed by Faulkner, we'll skip the blogging assignment this week (said to great cheers and much rejoicing). Anywho,
yesterday I mentioned holding a pizza/movie night. I will buy the pizzas and crap, and we'll all vote on what movie to watch. Is anyone interested?
If so, respond to this post a.s.a.p and we'll set up a night that works for everyone. None of this, though:
